Every semester, Emerson IT hosts an array of computing and software workshops. Open to all current Emerson students, faculty, and staff, topics covered generally include graphics and video editing, desktop and web publishing, and more. Browse our listings below, and sign-up using the RSVP link included below the description. Use your Emerson username and password to RSVP, and bring it with to the workshop so you can participate using a lab workstation.

Excel's Pivot Tables feature allows you to control how you view and organize your data in real time. In this workshop we will examine list making, sub totals, and tables as well as other features that compliment pivot tables. We’ll also learn how to create a Pivot Table data sheet, use the Pivot Table Wizard to create a pivot table, and then explore how to manipulate the data in different views.

Get hooked on Lynda.com! Join us as we watch a short, curated playlist of Lynda.com tutorials that are applicable to work at Emerson. Learn how to use practice files to work along with the video, and how to share playlists with colleagues and students.

Join Chris from the Instructional Technology Group and Robin from Lab Operations as they show you how easy it is to upload and share documents and media with Google Drive and Cabinet. We'll even throw in how to use VPN from home! Several example workflows will be shown, ranging from staff to faculty focus, but bring your own questions!

InDesign is a powerful desktop publishing tool that is used for both print and digital publications. This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the InDesign tools and interface while we create a multi-page newsletter. You will learn skills that can be used to create single- and multiple-page documents, from posters to research papers to magazines.

Photoshop is the industry leading standard for image editing and basic design. It has over 10,000 features and can seem overwhelming to a beginner. Photoshop Basics offers a simple, easy to follow introduction to how to take an image from your camera or email attachment and get it ready for professional distribution.
The workshop begins with an examination of alternatives to Photoshop for general use. We’ll also cover basic workflow, using Adobe bridge, image file types, cropping, resizing, removing red eye, and preparing for posting on the internet. We’ll also learn about general image processing and editing. You are invited to bring your own images for practice!

In this workshop we’ll be delving deeper into the image processing features of Photoshop. Covered in this workshop is custom selecting, using the tool bars, manually applying sharpening, contrast, saturation and vibrance, opening up shadows and recovering highlights.

Windows 8.1 will soon be rolling out for Staff and Faculty installs of Microsoft Windows. There is some excellent new functionality that comes with this important update. Come and learn how the new system is different from, and similar to the previous version of Windows, and how to leverage its functionality to best serve you in your job.
