Workshops

Every semester, Emerson IT hosts an array of computing and software workshops. Topics covered generally include graphics and video editing, desktop and web publishing, and more! Browse our listings, and sign-up for a session using the RSVP link included below the description (using your Emerson username and password).

This semester, we have workshops for students, as well as workshops for staff and faculty taught by our IT full-time staff! Be sure to bring your username and password to the workshop so you can participate using a lab workstation. See you there!

Intro to After Effects

Adobe After Effects iconAdobe After Effects is a powerful motion graphics and video compositing tool. Get started on creating your own compositions with this workshop.

Experience Level: Beginner–Intermediate. Must be comfortable using a computer. Video editing experience a plus.

Intro to InDesign

Adobe InDesign iconIf you would like to lay out a magazine, a poster, a pamphlet, or even a book, this workshop will help you to get started. This hands-on session will cover basic print layout and design using Adobe InDesign.

Experience Level: Beginner. Must be comfortable using a computer.

Intro to Maya: Modeling

Autodesk Maya iconCome learn the basics of modeling in Autodesk Maya, the industry-leading 3D animation toolkit. In this workshop, you'll learn how to navigate the Maya interface to create and texture 3D models. This workshop is a prerequisite to our Intermediate Maya workshop.

Experience Level: Beginner–Intermediate. Must be very comfortable using a computer.

Intermediate Maya: Animation

Intro to Movie Magic Scheduling

Entertainment Partners Movie Magic iconLearn how to go from script to production schedule with Entertainment Partners' Movie Magic Scheduling, the industry standard scheduling software. Follow-up the next week with our intro to Movie Magic Budgeting!

Intro to Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro iconProfessional video editing isn’t just for FCP and Avid: Adobe’s Premiere Pro is used in industry projects from David Fincher films to SNL’s digital shorts. Get started editing with Premiere Pro in our workshop.

Experience Level: Beginner–Intermediate. Must be comfortable using a computer. Some knowledge of video editing a plus.

Intro to Social Media Management Tools

Intro to Wordpress

Wordpress iconLearn how to create your own blog with the Web's most popular blogging platform. This hands-on session will cover creating a Wordpress.com account, setting up a new blog, using the Dashboard interface, and applying and adjusting themes.

HTML and CSS Basics

top of HTML documentThis workshop is an introduction to HTML and CSS, the building blocks of web development. This workshop assumes you have no knowledge of HTML and CSS. The workshop will be two hours long to allow ample time for demos and exercises.

Experience Level: Beginner. Must be comfortable using a computer.

Windows 8.1 Demystified

windows 8.1 logoMicrosoft's new operating system has a bad reputation for being confusing, and consumers are resistant to upgrade. While this version of Windows definitely represents a major change in design, with a little guidance, and a little practice, you can get the most out of some powerful new features.

Experience Level: Beginner.

HTML and CSS Advanced Tactics

top of HTML documentThis workshop is for learning advanced HTML and CSS techniques, such as using media queries for responsive design, complex CSS selectors, external fonts, animation, and HTML5 elements.

Experience Level: Advanced. Must be comfortable writing HTML and CSS; being familiar with the Chrome Dev Tools is a plus.

Head Shots and Simple Portrait Editing in Photoshop

Photoshop is the industry leading standard for image editing and basic design. Using photo portraits as an example, we will cover an introduction to basic workflow, using Adobe Bridge, cropping, resizing, removing red eye, and preparing for posting on the internet. We'll also go over features like selecting, cloning, levels, and the healing brush.

Experience Level: Beginner.

Excel Pivot Table Basics

Excel's Pivot Tables feature allows you to control how you view and organize your data in real time. In this workshop we will learn how to set up a basic data table, convert it into a pivot table and perform simple queries.

Lunch 'n' Lynda

Bring your lunch (optional) and learn how to get the most out of Lynda.com, the online video tutorial library you can access for free as an Emersonian. In this session, we will sign-up, navigate the website, explore the available content, and answer any questions you may have.
